Uganda’s top golfers are gearing up for back-to-back action in Kenya as the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing heads to Vetlab Sports Club from 2nd to 4th November, and Limuru Country Club from 9th to 11th November 2025, for the Betika Masters doubleheader.
The tournaments, which form the seventh and eighth legs of the Tour’s inaugural season, have attracted a competitive field of 84 players from across Africa, all vying for a share of the KSh 2 million prize purse at each leg, along with valuable Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.
Uganda will be represented by a strong contingent that includes Phillip Kasozi, Gaita Tadeo Rodell, Ronald Otile, Titus Okwong, Allan Mugisha, Marvin Kibirige, David Kamulindwa, Grace Kasango, Bagalana Hussein, and Abraham Ainamani, all of whom have been consistent participants on the Sunshine Development Tour since its launch earlier this year.
The Ugandan team has shown steady growth over the course of the Tour, with several players making the cut in multiple legs and registering impressive finishes against some of the region’s best golfers. With the Tour offering a pathway to higher-level competitions such as the Sunshine Tour in South Africa and the DP World Tour, the players are eager to make their mark.
Reflecting on the upcoming tournaments, Phillip Kasozi said he is focused on improving his overall performance and finishing under par across the three rounds.
“Every golfer enters a tournament with the intention to win, and for me, that goal never changes,” he said.
On aspects of his game that he has been working to improve on, he said, “I’ve been working a lot on my putting because I’ve always been a strong ball striker, but my finishing hasn’t matched up. Hopefully, in these two events, I can put it all together because if you can’t putt, you can’t win.
On the significance of the Tour to his progress as a golfer, he added, “As a professional, you need playing time, and this Tour has given us exactly that. It’s been a great mix of competition and growth, and I’m looking forward to build on that.”
His compatriot Gaita Tadeo Rodell, who impressed with a strong third-place finish at the Johnnie Walker Classic earlier this month, said the Tour has been a game-changer for golfers across the region.
“It’s always special to be part of the Sunshine Development Tour because the level of competition is simply outstanding,” Rodell said.
Rodell said he feels confident of his game heading to Kenya, “All areas of my game feel solid at the moment, especially my play off the deck, so I’ve been sharpening every detail ahead of these two events.
On the tour’s impact, he echoed Kasozi saying, “The Tour has come at a time when golf is really growing in East Africa, and for me personally, it has had a huge impact on my career. My performances have been improving steadily, and I’m aiming for a win to boost my confidence and take my game to the next level.”
The Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing, sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour of South Africa, provides a platform for golfers in the region to compete for world ranking points and opportunities to qualify for larger global tournaments. With events already held in Thika, Ruiru, Nyali, Diani, Kigali, and Royal Nairobi, the Tour has established itself as a key pathway for regional golfers aspiring to play on the international stage.
